Hearing Aid QualityOne of the most common problems with hearing aids is their ongoing exposure to moisture, wax and other foreign materials. Even brief exposure to these harsh environments can degrade and eventually interfere with proper hearing aid functionality. These issues may be accelerated for patients with more active lifestyles.
As a result, almost all hearing aids now contain some kind of water-resistant design to repel water, delaying or avoiding the detrimental effects of moisture. Starkey Hearing Technologies has developed a new protective hearing aid technology, called HydraShield®2, which not only improves upon existing water-resistant properties, but also adds resistance to waxes, oils and other liquids. Hearing care professionals and patients want hearing aids that are resistant to water, sweat, earwax and other foreign materials.
They desire hearing aids that work reliably in challenging environments and peace-of-mind in knowing that the sensitive electronics in their hearing aids are well-protected throughout years of ownership. In recent years, hearing aids have integrated water resistance to reduce corrosion and improve reliability. Unfortunately, water resistance did little to address the most common failure mode – the ingress of foreign materials, such as oils and earwax.
Through successful laboratory testing and actual patient experiences, HydraShield2 technology offers an effective and comprehensive solution, unrivaled in the industry. Not only does it optimize moisture protection through superhydrophobicity, but it also adds oleophobic surface properties. Together, these increase the longevity and durability of today’s hearing aids as well as add to patient satisfaction.

When you have a hearing loss, the simple pleasures in life become harder to enjoy. When you have trouble hearing, get-togethers with friends and family, hearing your grandchild’s voice or simply going to the movies can become a struggle. When it’s a struggle, you might feel like it’s just easier to not participate in the things you love any longer.
But being able to hear and understand what is being said is what keeps us connected to our world. Hearing aids are the best way to help those with hearing loss stay connected. There have also been some amazing technology advancements that help hard-of-hearing consumers enjoy what normal hearing people often take for granted. One of those advancements is closed captioning of movies.
Closed captioning is a technology that allows a person to read the dialogue of a movie or TV show on screen. For someone with hearing loss, this can be the difference between enjoying a movie or constantly missing the punch line. Closed captioning “fills in the blanks,” essentially.
Not all TV shows and not all movie theaters have closed captioning, however. So, if you have hearing loss and want to go to a movie, what do you do? Try Captionfish.com. Captionfish.com is a website that lists the available closed-captioned movies at theaters all over the United States.
A sophisticated search engine, Captionfish helps consumers find open captioned, “rear-window” captioned, subtitled, and descriptively narrated movies and lists them by theater and movie time. It also has captioned trailers for all of the most recent movies. The Captionfish website is easy to use because it uses your computer’s IP address to figure out what city you’re in to make suggestions for theaters near you without having to ask it to do so.Simple. Easy! Impressive.
So, if you have hearing loss and have struggled with enjoying movies, try closed captioning. And, to find the next closed captioned movie playing in your town, try Captionfish, a great website that is making it easier for those with hearing loss to enjoy life again.

This 7-minute vistic accompaniment of classical music. Pletsch, a former medical illustration student at the Medical College of Georgia, first built a physical ear model and mapped which frequency ranges hit which parts of the inner ear. He then created digital renderings of each part of the hearing pathway using several software packages. A narrator describes how the sound waves travel through each portion of the ear, and how hair cells translate the vibrations they induce into nerve impulses.

The most common form of hearing loss is called “nerve deafness.” This comes as a result of the fact that the cochlea (inner ear) and auditory nerves do not properly transmit their signal to the brain. Other possible causes are prolonged exposure to loud sounds, aging, heredity, certain illnesses, and
medications.
What should I do if I or a loved one suspects hearing loss?
The first step should be a professional hearing examination by a licensed specialist. This will help to determine the level and type of hearing loss, as well as what is needed in order to treat the hearing loss. Today’s modern hearing aid technology allows many hearing losses to be successfully corrected with a hearing aid. However, only about 25 percent of people who could benefit from the use of hearing aids actually do use them.
Which is the best brand of hearing aids?
There are approximately 24 worldwide hearing aid manufacturers, each producing exceptional quality products. Which brand is right for you will be determined by the results of your audiogram, your lifestyle, cosmetic requirements and your dexterity. Your hearing professional will select the brand only after selecting the type of circuit best suited for your individual hearing loss as indicated by your examination.
What style hearing aids do I need?
This is a personal choice which will be made between you and your hearing specialist. At Hearing Aid HealthCare, our approach is to discuss with you the physiological and cosmetic needs available to your individual hearing assessment and listening demands.
There are six primary styles:
1) the Intra-In-Canal (IIC), the newest and smallest style. They cannot be seen at all when worn.
2) The Completely-In-Canal (CIC), which is barely visible when worn.
3) The Receiver-In-Canal (RIC), which places the computer processor on top of the ear, with the receiver worn in the canal; these are practically unnoticeable when worn.
4) The In-the-Canal (ITC), which is slightly larger than the CIC.
5) The In-the-Ear (ITE), which fills the ear bowl.
6) The Behind-The-Ear (BTE), which is used with an ear mold worn in the ear bowl; this style is used when high-power output is needed.
How Much Do Hearing Aids Cost?
Hearing aid prices vary greatly, depending on several criteria, allowing them to be affordable to everyone. An entry level instrument will range from $600 to $1,200, and the premium instruments will range from $2,800 to $3,500 per hearing aid. The most common differences that affect pricing are the level of technology, style, performance, features, warranties and accessories. At Hearing Aid HealthCare, we carry the full spectrum of hearing instruments to fit any lifestyle and budget.
